Fieldtrip: The Skincare Journey

There are thousands of products out there. Even thousands more suggestions about how to use them.

Truth is, there are three things you need to know and a couple of things you’ll want to know.

1. You’ll need a CLEANSER.
This is the foundation of skin care. And yes, there are late nights and early mornings when you’re in a hurry and think, ugh, I don’t have time for this. But you’re going to brush your teeth (aren’t you?), so clean teeth, clean face, good to go!

Cleansing removes the dirt and oil that builds up over the course of the day and night. That means it helps you avoid clogged pores and breakouts aka acne and blackheads.

FT Fact: Squeaky clean is actually not a good thing.
Your skin needs a cleanser that doesn’t disrupt its natural protective barrier–a gentle, cleansing formula that isn’t harsh, that doesn’t cause irritation or redness. Cruelty free, clean, sulfate-free, paraben free. All of these “frees” are must-haves in a facial cleanser.

2. You'll love a TONER or a MIST.
Toners and mists are used after cleansing and before everything else. The very modern mist has also become a treat to be used whenever you just want a burst of cooling hydration.

The point of this spritz on your face is to prep your skin to absorb all kinds of good things–like serums and moisturizers. A little spritz after you cleanse also can help restore your skin’s pH balance and hydrate the skin to help with the next step in your skincare routine.

We are definitely all about the face MIST. These water-based products deliver a hit of hydration, and subjectively, they just feel good. With just a few spritzes, the surface of your skin is softened and prepped for the delivery of nutrients and moisture. Mists are usually full of skin-loving, natural ingredients–and can easily replace a toner. Plus they help soothe and nourish skin and give you a healthy-looking glow.

FT Fact: A natural toner or mist with plant-based ingredients is key.
Ingredients like rambutan (very hydrating) and aloe vera juice (very calming) help refresh, hydrate, and rejuvenate the skin, making it more than ready for the next step.

3. You’ll have to have a MOISTURIZER.
If you only have two products in your arsenal, a moisturizer and a cleanser are the non-negotiables. And believe it or not, choosing a moisturizer is pretty simple.

The purpose of a moisturizer is to soften and hydrate your skin. So, the texture of your moisturizer correlates directly with your skin type.

If your skin is oily, consider a gel or water-based moisturizer. This will hydrate your skin without turning it into an oil slick.
If your skin is dry, a cream moisturizer will be the best option, one that is more oil-based and a bit heavier than lotion.
If your skin is normal or combination, well, aren’t you the lucky one! Choose whichever form you prefer–lotion or cream.

Whatever you choose, keep it on your bathroom counter or cabinet or drawer and use it. Twice a day.

Now that you have a handle on the basics…

Let’s talk about the extras. These are the “specialty” products that can address problem areas, enhance the basic products you have, and simply said, make your skin look even better. (For some of us, these aren’t extras, they’re in the must-have category.)

These are a dream. They clear away dead and dry skin, and if you use one regularly, it can improve skin’s brightness and clarity. Exfoliators also help keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay and help your other products penetrate the skin more effectively and work even better.

These are the multitaskers of the skincare world. They nourish, protect, hydrate, brighten, and often help with problems like dullness, fine lines, discoloration, and acne. Serums are a concentrated dose of ingredients and should be used after cleansing and before moisturizing.

Because there are different types of serums–anti-aging, brightening, hydrating, acne-prone, and reparative–choose the one that works best for your skin’s needs.

There are so many ways to look at this one (see what we did there?). Do you need something to combat fine lines and wrinkles in the eye area? Or something that cools and de-puffs after a long day at work or a long night out. Or something that does both?

Eye creams or lotions are generally designed to combat the signs of aging while gels usually help with puffiness, dark circles, and brightness.

Whatever your eyes are telling you, listen! And choose according to your particular needs.
