The Benefits of Rambutan for Skin

You may have heard bakuchiol touted as a gentler alternative for retinol — but have you heard of rambutan? This plant-based retinol alternative offers many benefits for the skin and is gentle enough for almost anyone to use, which is why it’s the star ingredient of our hydrating facial spray. Here’s what you need to know about antioxidant-packed, skin resurfacing powerhouse:

What Is Rambutan?

Rambutan is a flowering fruit tree that is native to Southeast Asia, and it thrives in tropical places such as Indonesia and Malaysia and can grow up to 80 feet tall. The fruit is about the size of a golf ball. It has a pit covered by a translucent white flesh, which is itself covered by a red shell dotted in green tendrils. Rambutan gets its name from the Malay word for “hair” due to its unique appearance. Some people even say that it looks a bit like a sea urchin! In order to harvest the flesh of the fruit, the shell is halved and removed to expose the flesh, then the pit is removed as well. The peel, pulp, pit, and/or leaves can all be used in skincare products, making this a very versatile and effective natural skincare ingredient.

Benefits of Rambutan

Like we mentioned in the intro, rambutan is touted as a gentler alternative to retinol. That’s because rambutan helps to resurface the skin by gently clearing away dead skin cells and also encouraging the product of new skin cells. This helps your skin to become more plump and firm and to promote a more youthful, healthy appearance overall.

Not only does rambutan help to resurface your skin, it’s also packed full of antioxidants and vitamins that help to promote a healthy skin barrier. The antioxidants also fight against free radical damage that is caused by pollution and UV exposure, which can hasten the appearance of aging. If you are looking to try more plant-based natural skincare ingredients, then rambutan should definitely be high on your list!

How to Use Rambutan for Your Skin

All of these benefits are why we made Rambutan the star ingredients of our Wandermist Hydrating Facial Spray. Since it’s a spray, it can be used by all skin types, both oily and dry. It’s lightweight enough that even oily skincare types can use it in the dead of summer, while it layers beautifully underneath serums and creams for dry skin types.

After washing your face, pat it dry, then hold the bottle 8-10 inches away from face, close your eyes, and mist evenly all over your face. Allow the spray to dry down, then continue with the rest of your skincare routine. You can also use the spray throughout the day whenever your skin needs a cool, hydrating boost. Be sure to close your eyes tightly each time that you use it. If you do get the spray in your eyes, rinse them out immediately with water.
